What is Fibromyalgia Exactly?

Symptoms of this syndrome include widespread musculoskeletal pain and tenderness in muscles, tendons, joints and soft tissues. People who have the condition also complain of sleep problems, fatigue, headaches, anxiety, neck pain, back pain and depression. Experts believe that the condition is caused by the way your brain processes signals, which amplifies pain. More women than men suffer from the condition. Research has not pinpointed the exact cause of this syndrome, but genetics, infections, physical trauma and emotional stress seem to play a significant role.

Norfolk Chiropractic Treatment

chronic-pain_med_1.jpgWhile there is no known cure for fibromyalgia yet, there are a number of treatment methods our Norfolk chiropractor can offer to alleviate your symptoms. At Norfolk Chiropractic, Dr. M. Scott Niblo offers several complementary and alternative chiropractic treatments to help relieve the neck pain, back pain and other symptoms that are common with this condition. Acupuncture is one such treatment method that uses needles to change blood flow and neurotransmitters in the spinal cord and brain. Some studies and patient reports indicate relief from symptoms with acupuncture.
Massage therapy is another effective tool for treating this troublesome condition. Chiropractic massage involves working with the muscles and soft tissues in your body to promote flexibility, increased circulation and heal connective tissue. Massage has a number of stress and anxiety-reducing properties as well. Massage helps to relax muscles, reduce your heart rate and improve range of motion. Spinal decompression may be introduced in conjunction with massage therapy.

Our chiropractor may use cold laser therapy as yet another chiropractic treatment option for people who are suffering with this condition. The major benefits of cold laser therapy are decreased sensation of pain and tissue-healing stimulation.

Another treatment method is trigger point therapy. Trigger points are made up of spasmed muscle fibers, and it can be a source of isolated pain or radiating pain. Light trigger point therapy can be beneficial in reducing or eliminating pain associated with this syndrome. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Niblo to find out how we can help you with pain relief.
